Didactic Information Butler had an ongoing fascination with the West that stemmed from his first visit to California as a young man. Throughout his life, he made numerous sketches of desert landscapes capturing various weather patterns in his work. In Storm in the Desert, the artist used pastels to recreate a storm brewing in the Mohave Desert in California.
