After a landscape by Lewis Scott Croft

As if to echo the song
of the hollow reed,
the frozen lake chants and moans.

Even in summer it was one life,
fluid and brimming,
with its thousand tongues
tingling the shore,
but paralyzed by winter
it find the voice of its soul.

All distractions are sealed
beneath the weight of ice,
and the stone whale sings
to the gods and empties its chest
of its longings.

Oh, those deep hollow songs,
those songs to transform
the meaning of joy.

Ice Age
After a painting by Lewis Scott Croft
block layered block
dusty ice piled
on cold shores
history of eons
trapped in ice tablets
mere traces
of lost tribes
of first ancestors,
the bone and pollen
of animals and plants extincted
by our own hand
core samples remembering
last century's
volcanoes in Peru
forest fires in Brazil
the effluvia of petroleum devouring
machines grinding us toward our own oblivion
all just the tip of the iceberg,
global warming
slow melting our history
inundating our shore lines in tears
