Baskin's artistic influences are mainly drawn from the Bible and Greek mythology. Tobias and the Angel depicts a story from the Book of Tobin, which tells of Tobias' journey to collect money for his blind father. Tobias, accompanied by the Archangel Raphael, encounters large fish whose internal organs supply the medicine necessary to cure his father's blindness.
This story has been painted numerous times over hundreds of years. In the late 16th century commissions of paintings of Tobias and the Angel were often regarded as an offer of thanks for a safe return.
