In 1585, he renounced his birthright and joined the Society of Jesus. When the plague broke out in Rome, Aloysius carried the sick to hospitals on his back, caught the plague and died at the age of 23 in 1591. He is the patron of the young, of students and of those choosing a career, and is portrayed with a pronounced nose and receding hairline.
