Tecumseh, a Shawnee warrior, is considered a legendary folk hero of the War of 1812 with a fascinating life story. Related to this image, as a young man he witnessed the torture of prisoners. He vowed never to allow captives to be mistreated in his presence. Artists depicted his likeness in various publications including in this scene from The Battles of America by Land & Sea, 1878, where a painting by John R. Chapin was reproduced as an engraving by G.C. Armytage.
