Didactic Information Chuang Che's work meets at the conjunction of East and West, between contemplative and action painting, and between pure consciousness and observation. Born the son of a scholar and famous calligrapher, Che set out to push the limits of Chinese painting toward modernism. In Early Morning, 1967, we see the influence of Chinese calligraphy combined with street writing or graffiti. Underneath the paint, there is a collaged newspaper article pertaining to an early morning baseball game. In the 1960s, Che joined Fifth Moon, a group of artists dedicated to creating a bridge between modernist abstraction and traditional
Asian painting.
