Most retablos of the Holy Trinity follow the representation of the subject attributed to painters Juan and Miguel Cabrera. The Holy Ghost is depicted as a dove, after the Catholic Church issued a ban on its representation in human form in the 17th century. God the Father, generally holding a scepter signifying his power, appears to the right of the dove. Christ is shown to God's right ("He shall sit at the right hand of the Father"), holding his cross and exhibiting the stigmata, the marks of his crucifixion. Both Father and Son have angels at their feet. The presence of clouds indicates that this vision is of heaven. |
