The circle's archetypal symbol can be seen as a reference to the eternal connections between humanity and nature. Raphael Collazo was a New York City neo-Abstract Expressionist of Puerto Rican birth. Passages 1 is an example of Collazo's later work, created after an artist residency at the noted Vermont Studio Colony. Such works address the forces of nature and are noted by layered floating circles, verdant colors, and ethereal spirituality Collazo's artistic aim was to "touch some deeper reaction source, achieve excitement, beautiful excitement, painting excitement, the excitement of paint."
