Didactic Information |
This image is especially popular among poor or oppressed people as it represents solace and comfort from the suffering of the human condition. In the many reproductions of this theme, there is little variation in composition. Mary is seen holding the Christ child, who is clothed in a diaphanous gown; the transparence reveals his human, rather than divine, form. Both wear crowns and Mary's cipher, or monogram, appears on her gown. |
