Didactic Information The inspiration for the Mystic Vintage comes from Isaiah-"I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me." It is set on Mount Golgotha (also called Calvary), the site of Christ's crucifixion. Christ is shown under a grapevine, bearing the wounds from the crucifixion, and kneeling in prayer. Blood flows from the wounds into a chalice, in turn into the mouths of lambs. This image represents Christ's blood, the vintage that cleanses the sins of the world, filling the chalice used in Catholic mass. There are seven sacrificial lambs, who represent the seven sacraments. In one rendering, the chalice rests on a book with seven seals representing the Book of Revelation.
