Didactic Information |
Frederick Batcheller was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1837. As an apprentice with Tingley Brothers marble carvers, he began his career as a marble cutter, producing marble busts. However, after 1855 he devoted his career to painting, achieving recognition for his still life paintings. Fellow artist George Whitiker dubbed Batcheller "the Romantic" because he played haunting melodies on his violin while locked in his studio. |
