In this rendering of the Virgin Mary, she is floating in clouds, surrounded by cherubim, and elevated above Saints Dominic and Francis. Holding the Christ child, she extends a rosary to Saint Dominic and the knotted cord of the Franciscan habit to Saint Francis. A 15th century legend attributes the invention of the rosary, a string of beads used as a mnemonic device for saying prayers, to Saint Dominic. Both saints are dressed in the robes of their orders. |
