Nicolaes Berchem belonged to the second generation of Dutch Italiantes, a group who depicted the Italian countryside. These paintings were in high demand in Holland, and during the 17th century, landscape painting flourished as an independent genre in the Dutch Republic and Spanish Netherlands. This genre consists of landscape, seascape, still life, and everyday life paintings. Many factors that gave rise to this style of painting, however the most significant influence was the urbanization of European society during the 16th and 17th century. (October 2017) |
