Berninghaus was founding member of the Taos Society of Artists, a group inspired by the landscape and people of Taos, New Mexico. In the late 1800s, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad hired him to produce illustrations, which led him to his first visit West and to New Mexico. He fell in love with the area, and stayed in the town part of each year before moving there permanently in 1925. ----- Berninghaus fue el miembro fundador de Taos Society of Art, un grupo inspirado por el paisaje y la gente de Taos, Nuevo México. A finales de los 1800, el Dever and Rio Grande Railroad lo contrató para producir ilustraciones, que le llevaron a su primera visita al Oeste y a Nuevo México.
