Working with paper pulp, wood, thread, vinyl, and found objects, Phoenix artist Denise Yaghmourian creates sculptures that represent an amalgamation of artistic styles. Yaghmourian is inspired by patterns in nature, math and science, the brain, and life and relationships. The intersection of natural and manmade designs is a reoccurring theme explored in her work. In Yaghmourian's "Fibers and Figures" series, the artist emphasizes austere cube forms, which recall the Minimalist works of Donald Judd. However, by wrapping her cubes with mass-produced bra and corset making hook and eye tape, and hand lacing fine threads between the elements to create delicate patterns, Yaghmourian also recalls Post-minimalist concepts from the late 1960s. Post-minimalism borrowed ideas of repetition from Minimalism, yet focused on the use of organic materials and the direct involvement of the artist. Using mass-produced bra and corset making supplies, Yaghmourian's hand-sewn works make feminist statements about the constrictive nature of women's garments prevalent in modern society.
