Scherenshnitt, or paper cutting, is a form of German art that dates back to the 16th century. This is a distinctly German art form in its style and use, but cutting paper has been of interest to people since the invention of paper by the Egyptians more than five thousand years ago. Scherenshnitt was brought to America with the influx of German immigrants in the 18th century, who settled primarily in Pennsylvania. These delicate works of art have been used for many purposes including love letters, decorations for the home, Christmas ornaments, Valentines, silhouettes, and for personal enjoyment. |
