The circle's presence in art is both concrete and abstract. Chicago painter Andrew Young has been investigating nature's symbolic permanence and its mystery since his days as a biology student during his undergraduate years at California, Berkley. In Tigress, Young presents the symbol of a circle against a crackling background, a reference to the painter's continued reliance on the philosophical connections between art history and nature, and the eternalness of ancient society's impact on modern thought. Often inspired by scientific journal illustrations and designs and images in modern art, Young' work shifts between geometric abstraction and a direct investigation of the connections between nature's symbolism and natural images on the psyche of humanity.
