Painter, graphic artist, and muralist Dolores Guerrero-Cruz was born in Colorado and grew up in East Los Angeles. Active in both the Chicano and feminists movements, she studied art at California State University, Los Angeles, where she first began working with Self-Help Graphics. She later became active with the art collective RCAF (Rebel Chicano Art Front, or Royal Chicano Air Force ) in Sacramento, supporting the efforts of César Chávez and the United Farm Workers. In 1977, she transferred back to Los Angeles, returned to work at Self-Help Graphics, and became involved in teaching students to create murals in the area. Red Rider in the Hood depicts a young man in jeans and a billed cap-his hands thrust in his pockets. He walks the street at night with a full moon overhead-a jagged gash of clouds slices into the moon. Yet what truly stands out is the red furry cloak that hugs his body-he is a sheep in wolf's clothing. The image calls into question to whom the night belongs. This piece is part of a suite of prints published by Movimiento del Rio Salado (MARS). MARS was an artist-run non-profit space that operated in Phoenix from 1978 to 2001, created to promote Arizona, Mexican/American, and Chicano visual, performing, and literary arts.
